Jane Eppel’s work glimpses into the personal space of an artist who celebrates beauty and depth in unexpected places. Her work has been described as “quiet meditations which operate on two intersecting planes that allow the fusion of seeming opposites: privacy and accessibility, the personal and the public, the mysterious and the mundane, the spiritual and the worldly” (Prof. Neville Dubow, opening address of ‘Sanctum’).
Although Jane’s dreamlike paintings are populated with a cast of family and friends and the scenes are set predominantly around her home in Cape Town, they represent a deeper concept of the archetypal, universal, mythical home. Her interest in the idea of rootedness gave rise to her acclaimed second solo show ‘Sanctum’ (Bell Roberts Gallery, March 2008) and remains a central preoccupation of her work.
Since April 2010 Jane has been exploring the medium of copperplate etching. She works series by series, and these are multi-themed: from whimsy to botany to species of dogs! Jane's new etchings will be included on many group shows in the upcoming months (details to follow).
Jane Eppel lives and works in Clovelly, Cape Town. For more information, or to enquire about private commissions, please contact the studio.
